Careers After the Military: Discover Osteopathy as a Veteran

Careers After the Military: Discover Osteopathy as a Veteran

Have you left the armed forces, or are you considering switching to a completely different career after the military? It’s no secret that life after the armed forces can feel hugely daunting, but it should be reassuring for you to know that your military skills and experience extend far beyond the forces. Transitioning to civilian life presents a whole new set of challenges, but it also opens up

new opportunities to make a meaningful impact within a completely different field.

Discovering Osteopathy

Osteopathy plays a vital role in healthcare by offering a holistic approach to addressing a wide range of health issues. Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses solely on

treating symptoms, osteopathy considers the body as a unified system, addressing the root causes of illness to promote overall well-being.

At the London School of Osteopathy (LSO), our courses are hugely popular with people who want to make a difference in people’s lives. For those accustomed to environments where precision and care are paramount, LSO offers the perfect environment to further your education. We specialise solely in osteopathy, ensuring that your learning is focused and applicable from day one. Our unique clinical experiences prepare you for a future where you can directly impact individual health.

What Makes Osteopathy a Fulfilling Career?

A new career after the military in osteopathy offers you the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Osteopaths have a direct impact on their patients’ well-being, helping them with issues such as:

  • Alleviating musculoskeletal pain and discomfort
  • Improving mobility and flexibility
  • Enhancing overall physical function
  • Managing chronic conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Addressing postural imbalances and ergonomic issues
  • Managing stress-related symptoms such as tension and anxiety

This holistic approach to healthcare is hugely rewarding, helping you to find a new purpose and dedication in your new role after serving.

Why Do Veterans Make Great Osteopaths?

In our experience, we’ve seen that veterans possess a unique set of skills and qualities that make them well-suited for a career in osteopathy. Discipline, dedication, and a strong work ethic are ingrained in military training, and these attributes can help you excel in the field of osteopathy – especially as you move up the ladder.

As well as this work ethic, the ability to remain calm under pressure and strong problem-solving skills are crucial in the practice of osteopathy. Each patient presents a unique set of challenges, and osteopaths must be able to assess, diagnose, and develop tailored treatment plans to address individual needs.

How to Become an Osteopath

If you’ve just left the military, you don’t have to have come from a medical field – although this can be advantageous. To become qualified, you need to hold a recognised degree from the General Osteopathic Council. An osteopath degree takes between 3 years 6 months and 4 years to complete on a full-time basis. You can also study on a flexible and part-time basis, which will take about 5 years to complete.

If you’re considering studying with the LSO, the typical entry requirements include:

  • A minimum of 2 A levels, with at least one in a science discipline. Science subjects include PE and Psychology.

AND/OR

  • Completion of a BTEC in fields like Sports Science or Health and Social Sciences.

For mature students without these qualifications, we consider Level 3 credentials in disciplines such as ITEC Massage & Anatomy, Personal Training, or related fields involving the study of anatomy and physiology.
